The Ashburton 1 & 2 solar farms together generate a total of 7 MW of renewable energy and began generating power in early 2025.
The solar arrays cover a total of eight hectares of an existing 16-hectare rural lifestyle farm south of Ashburton and the agrivoltaic farm design enables ongoing agricultural activities beneath and around the solar arrays. This approach supports continued grazing and pasture management alongside energy production and the landowners at Ashburton graze sheep in the solar paddocks.
The site contains thousands of solar panels that track the movement of the sun throughout the day, producing clean electrical energy for the needs of the local district, including powering irrigation pumps through the summer months.
Lightyears built and developed the entire 7 MW farm and owns and operates 1 MW of the total with RCR Green owning the remainder.
